Media Regulation in Russia - A Landscape Analysis of Laws and Trends

This new report is a study of laws regulating online and print media in Russia. The legal framework governing Russian media has undergone substantial development in recent years – developments which have a significant impact on the way that journalists and media players in Russia are able to operate.

This report was developed as a resource to support the Perspektivy programme (a collaboration between Thomson Reuters Foundation, Fritt Ord Foundation and Robert Bosch Stiftung) that aims to strengthen professional standards and ethics in journalism and to promote collaboration between journalists in Russia and Russian speaking countries. It is also available as a resource for all journalists to better understand the legal framework in which they operate.

The research was conducted and the report written by DLA Piper Rus Limited on pro bono basis and facilitated by TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global legal pro bono programme. The report is based on a review of the evolution media legislation in Russia over the past five years and includes an overview of key trends, recent legislative developments and their implications for journalists, bloggers and media players.

Utlysning: Fritt Ords masterstipend 2026

Stiftelsen Fritt Ord lyser ut stipend til masterprosjekter som tar for seg ytringsfrihet i juridisk betydning og/eller ytringskultur i bredere, kulturell forstand. Teknologiens rolle for ytringsfrihet og ytringskultur, minoriteter og andre gruppers forhold til ytringsfrihet står sentralt.
Stipendene er på 40 000 kroner.

Tett på kildene - utlysning til skolebibliotek på videregående skole 2026

Fritt Ord lyser ut midler til skolebibliotek ved videregående skoler. Skolebiblioteket kan søke kroner 50 000 i økonomisk støtte til pedagogiske opplegg. Søknadsfrist er 22. mai 2026 og tilskuddet går til prosjekter som gjennomføres i skoleåret 2026/2027.

Call for nominations: Free Media Awards 2026

In collaboration with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards – Supporting Independent Journalism in Eastern Europe – annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrates the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalist, editorial teams and media companies in and from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine and Hungary who make a contribution to press freedom through their investigative, independent reporting can be nominated for the Free Media Awards.
