Call for nominations: Free Media Awards 2025

In collaboration with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrates the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalist, editorial teams and media companies in and from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine and Hungary who make a contribution to press freedom through their investigative, independent reporting can be nominated for the Free Media Awards.

The Fritt Ord Foundation and the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS hereby invite nominations of independent journalists, Internet media and newspapers for the 2025 Free Media Awards.
Nominations will be accepted until Monday 31 March 2025, and should include an explanation of why the journalist or media outlet is considered to be a good candidate for the Free Media Awards. Please note that nominations should include references to the quality of their work. The nomination statements should be 1 to 2 pages long, and include a short biography and links to articles, where relevant. To qualify for nomination, journalists and media outlets must have demonstrated a commitment to democracy and freedom of expression.

The Fritt Ord Foundation and the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS will be awarding 5 press prizes in 2025.
The 2024 Free Media Awards were bestowed on journalists Nastasia Arabuli (Georgia), Mikhail Afanasiev (Russia, currently imprisoned), Larysa Shchyrakova (Belarus, currently imprisoned) as well as, for the first time, a journalist from Hungary, Szabolcs Panyi, and the editorial teams from Bihus.Info (Ukraine) and Abzas Media (Azerbaijan).

The prize laureates are chosen on the basis of nominations, which are then reviewed by an independent jury.

Fritt Ord på Arendalsuka: Mediene i KI – og Hvem slipper til i media

Fritt Ord er på Arendalsuka i august: Hvilke stemmer slipper til i mediene? Og hvordan endrer kunstig intelligens journalistikken? Mandag 10. august tar Fritt Ord disse to debattene til Bystyresalen i Arendal med to samtaler om medienes fremtid:
Kl. 14.30: «Hvem kommer til orde i norske medier?»
Kl. 16.30: «KI og veien videre for mediene»

Med VGs Gard Steiro og Xueqi Pang, Stavanger Aftenblads Kjersti Sortland, DNs Janne Johannessen, Fædrelandsvennens Eivind Ljøstad og Retrievers Guro Lindebjerg samt Fritt Ords Tellef Raabe, Ammal Ahmed Haj Mohamed og Joakim Lie.

Fritt Ords journaliststipend i Oxford – The Fritt Ord Journalism Fellowship 2027

Stiftelsen Fritt Ord lyser ut et halvårig journaliststipend ved Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism ved universitetet i Oxford, England, med studiestart i januar 2027.

Søknadsfristen for studieoppholdet som starter januar 2027, er 1. september 2026, kl 12.00 (på dagtid).

Ny avis på Vestlandet og mer innsyn i «hemmelige» eiere – nye tildelinger i journalistikk juni 2026

Innsyn.no skal utvides med søk i «hemmelige» norske eiere, Syn og Segn får støtte til nye utgaver og den nye avisen «Vestlendingen» lanseres i august.
– Ingen av debatt- og idéavisene i Norge har hovedsete utenfor Oslo, sier Vestlendingens kommende redaktør, Mathias Fischer.

Uro under en stabil overflate?: Lansering av en ny undersøkelse om befolkningens syn på ytrings- og informasjonsfrihet

Stiftelsen Fritt Ord og Institutt for samfunnsforskning inviterer til rapportlansering og samtale mandag 8. juni 2026 kl. 9.00–11.00 i Fritt Ords lokaler i Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

Hvor trekker folk grenser for ytringsfriheten og hva mener de er de største truslene mot en opplyst debatt i en tid preget av uro, kriser og internasjonale konflikter? Synes de meningsmangfoldet er stort nok og takhøyden tilstrekkelig? Og hvordan vurderer folk tilgangen til sannferdig og relevant informasjon i et medielandskap med nye formater og stemmer og kunstig intelligens?
